Cyclone separators
1. Structure
The cyclone separator mainly consists of the following parts:
• Intake pipe: It is usually designed as a tangential inlet which ensures the gas shall rotate quickly after entering.
• Cylinder: It provides enough space for solid particles separated under centrifugal force.
• Cone: It helps to reduce the resistance of gas flow and promotes the settlement of particles.
• Exhaust outlet: It locates at the top, for discharging the purified gas.
• Collection container: It shall collect separated solid particles.
2. Working principle
The working principle of the cyclone separator is based on the principle of centrifugal force and airflow rotation. When the gas containing solid particles enters the cyclone, it enters the cylindrical upper part of the separator through the tangential direction, and the air flow forms a rotating motion under this design. This rotational motion causes the gas and solid particles to be subjected to centrifugal forces. As the solid particles are denser than the gas, they are tossed towards the outer wall of the cyclone under the action of centrifugal force and slide down the outer wall until they reach the bottom of the cone. Finally, the mixture shall be collected. After the rotating motion of the upper part of the cyclone, the air flow from the middle down, and then up again, through the exhaust pipe of the separator,and the clean gas shall be finally expelled.
3. Technical parameters
• Separation accuracy: Solid particles ≥10μm can be removed under the design pressure and gas volume conditions. At the operating point, the separation efficiency is 99%, and at the operating point ±15%, the separation efficiency is 97%.
• Pressure drop: Under normal working conditions, the pressure drop of a single cyclone separator at the working point is not higher than 0.05MPa.
• Service life: The cyclone separator is suitable for purifying non-viscous, non-fibrous dry dust greater than 1-3 microns. It is a purification equipment with simple structure, easy operation, high temperature resistance, high equipment cost and high resistance (80 ~ 160 mm water column).
4. Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
• Efficient separation: Using the dual action of centrifugal force and rotating air flow, fine solid particles shall be effectively separated.
• Simple structure: Cyclone separators usually contain only one inlet and two outlets, simple structure, easy to maintain and operate.
• Low energy consumption: Since no additional energy is used, the cyclone's energy consumption is relatively low.
• Small footprint: The cyclone separator is small in size and takes up less space, which is suitable for limited space.
Disadvantages:
• The separation effect is limited by the particle size: the cyclone separator has less separation effect for mixtures with small particle size, and requires higher rotation speed and more complex structure to achieve good separation effect.
• High resistance: The resistance of the cyclone separator is high, usually between 80 and 160 mm water column.
