Dissolved oxygen concentration
1. Definition
Dissolved oxygen concentration refers to the amount of oxygen dissolved in water, usually expressed as milligrams of oxygen per liter of water (mg/L). It is one of the important indicators to measure the quality of water quality, and is also a key parameter for the survival of aquatic organisms.
2. Influencing factors
• Water temperature: Increase in water temperature shall cause decrease in dissolved oxygen, as the solubility of oxygen in water decreases with increasing temperature.
• Atmospheric pressure: Changes in atmospheric pressure shall affect the solubility of oxygen, and dissolved oxygen will be reduced when the pressure is reduced.
• Salinity: Increased salinity in water reduces dissolved oxygen.
• Decomposition of organic matter: Organic matter in water decomposes under the action of microorganisms, which consumes a large amount of oxygen, thereby reducing dissolved oxygen.
3. Measurement method
• Iodine measurement: By adding manganese sulfate and basic potassium iodide, forming manganese hydroxide precipitation, and then acidifying and reacting with potassium iodide to produce iodine, and finally using starch as an indicator to titration, and then calculate the dissolved oxygen.
• Electrode paleography: The diffusion current shall be measured by using a constant voltage between electrodes, and the current is proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration, and the dissolved oxygen shall be determined.
• Fluorescence method: Using the quenching effect of fluorescent substances, the dissolved oxygen concentration is determined by measuring the intensity and lifetime of fluorescence.
4. Importance
The concentration of dissolved oxygen has an important effect on the survival of aquatic organisms and the self-purification ability of water quality. The high dissolved oxygen level is conducive to the degradation of pollutants, so that the water shall be purified quickly. On the contrary, low dissolved oxygen levels shall slow down the degradation of pollutants and affect the self-purification capacity of the water body.
